Joshua 1:9 Be Strong and Courageous

Joshua 1:9 Be Strong and Courageous

Joshua 1:9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

Moses has just died, passing leadership to his longtime #2, Joshua. The Israelites have now been wandering in the desert for 40 years while most of a whole generation has died off and they are now anticipating re-entry to the promised land after four hundred years gone. God had given them a miraculous escape from slavery in Egypt and the army of Pharaoh 40 years ago, but now what ? I would have been pretty nervous, anxious even. Yes, for sure, there was God’s past faithfulness, but also his severity with his beloved, but recalcitrant, people. What’s next? Whether we are senior seniors or preschoolers, transitions are always fraught. We like the familiar and the comfortable. Don’t rock my boat – this is how I’ve always done this. But what if…?

God’s response is still the same as in Joshua’s day – fear not, I’m with you. No you are never alone – set aside the worry and keep going. Just a few verses earlier God said to go occupy that new territory, for I’m leading you. Possess it fully – every place the sole of your foot shall tread I will give to you. Tremble not, nor be dismayed. No. We are never alone. So go embrace and not fear, whatever the unknown on the horizon of your life.
