John 10: 14-15 “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me—just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep.

And now that moment hastens near  – tonight Jesus is arrested – tomorrow the cross. The Old Testament was all about his Abba Father’s relationship with Israel and her history of approach, then avoidance, of God’s holiness, trustworthiness, and steadfast commitment to them. They were always in need of rescue of some kind. They couldn’t stay on course – wandering off, like sheep, getting lost in the hills, getting stuck and held fast in thorny brambles, wet wooly coats soaked with spring rain sometimes kept them from even getting upright after a fall. Hmm. Sounds like us. And amazingly, the rescuing shepherd of us all turns out to be one of the sheep himself; but a perfect one on whose shoulders we are carried safely home.
