CHOICE TO REJOICE

CHOICE TO REJOICE

Psalm 118:24 This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.

This day is everyday. The message is not just for weekend or vacation days. Nor is it only for beautiful sunny spring days of blue skies and birdsong. Rejoicing comes more naturally on those days of course, but that’s just further evidence of the need to be reminded of the command St Paul so often writes about: “rejoice always” he tells the church in Philippi and says it again in his first letter to the church in Thessalonica. In fact, in every one of his nine epistles to new testament churches Paul writes multiple times of rejoicing, and often in the context of difficulties, whether of external circumstances or of our own making. But why? Why is that so important? In my life and thinking it’s because we often forget, especially when feeling stuck in our difficulties, frustrations, regrets, failures and such, that the core truth of our lives is sure – we are beloved children of God almighty who promises to love us always, never leave or forsake us, and finally bring us to that highest and best state of being made-over in closer resemblance to Jesus, the great rescuer who has claimed us for eternity. Let’s make every choice to rejoice to bring us back to focus on that true north of our life’s compass so that we do not lose our way – or recover it quickly if we do.
