Deuteronomy 6: 4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord is our God, the Lord alone

Deuteronomy 6: 4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. 5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart. 7 Recite them to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise. 8 Bind them as a sign on your hand, fix them as an emblem on your forehead, 9 and write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

Verse 4 here is the centerpiece, the essential part of the Jewish belief in and commitment to monotheism. Christians agree with that fully. Though we have a trinitarian faith, we too know that God is One God, yet expressed in and through three distinct divine persons. Our God is bigger than mere human arithmetic can fathom. The point of today’s message however is not verse 4 so much as verse 9. Most Jewish homes have a mezuzah on the exterior doorframe. A mezuzah is little case of just a couple of inches containing a small piece of parchment bearing today’s scripture verses and several others too. Among other things, it identifies the occupants as Jewish. With rising anti-semitism in the U.S. and other countries it can, sadly, be thought a risky practice. Please pray for your Jewish friends, neighbors and acquaintances – for both safety and boldness.
