EXTERNALITIES

1 Samuel 16:7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Don’t be impressed by his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. God does not view things the way men do. People look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

God sent the prophet Samuel to the home of Jesse to choose a new king from among Jesse’s sons. The first one up was big, strong and handsome. But he wasn’t God’s choice for the job. We humans look too quickly on outward appearances – it’s an easy thing to do – much harder is to look past the obvious, outward, stereotypical bases on which we too often judge, and, instead, take the time and care to get to know people in their individuality and depth. Make the time and energy investment to find the real person on the other side of externals such as height, shape, fashion, ethnicity, accent, or age.   Pastor Bill
