Ephesians 1:17-18    I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints.

Many times in scripture, heart, soul, mind and strength are mentioned as the aspects of life with which we are called to love God.  I believe that is because it is a reflection of how God loves us. These aspects are quoted often in scripture; and each time, heart is mentioned first. Soul generally refers to the essential self, our consciousness. Mind is obvious, and strength has to do with focused energy. Heart though is always mentioned first because it is the most difficult for us emotionally, and we are very largely emotional beings. It’s difficult because we wonder, how can, why does, is it possible that: the God of the universe has an emotional attachment to each of us and longs to see that attachment recognized, reciprocated and passed along in our little corner of the world. St Paul, in this passage today, prays for the eyes of our hearts/emotions to be opened to that great flow of love intended for receiving and sharing in our little corner of the world.
