John 4:21 The Essence of Our Calling

In the End, Love Wins

John 4:21 The Essence of Our Calling

John 4:21 “Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”

Verses 23 and 24 here anticipate a transformational change whereby worship is liberated by the Spirit from the limitations of space and geography and into the truth of God’s omnipresence and accessibility for all people through the coming of Christ – no exclusivity – neither for the Jewish temple in Jerusalem nor the Samaritan temple atop Mt Gerizim which lies in the still contested west bank, formerly part of Jordan. A small community of Samaritans still worships there on the lower slopes and still celebrates Passover with the sacrifice of a lamb. Jesus’ statement that “salvation is from the Jews” seems to mean neither more nor less than that the savior, the rescuer come for all humanity, grew out of the physical, historical and spiritual seedbed of Israel to free the whole creation from the power of sin and death, aka all failures of love. The ultimate consequences of such cumulative human failures across all of time and all of world geography are what Jesus absorbed into Himself, unto death on Calvary. It’s a long slow process, but ultimately, LOVE WINS when Spirit and Truth take back the world. Our lives are a very small yet critical part of moving that process along. That’s the essence of our calling.
