John 8: 28 The Truth Will Make You Free

John 8: 28 So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will realize that I am he and that I do nothing on my own, but I speak these things as the Father instructed me 29 And the one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what is pleasing to him.” 30 As he was saying these things, many believed in him. 31 Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”

The “if” statement of Jesus in verse 31 isn’t intended as a conditional if-then message, but as prescriptive. Jesus is saying, in effect, keep on following, listening, studying and internalizing the truth of my (His) identity and the heart of His teachings. That’s the route to growing into the fullness of freedom to live in accord with both the underlying nature of reality as God designed it, and the power of God’s love on which everything is based. Another way to say it is that He is the way for us to become fully human. It seems we set a trajectory for that in this life and continue on that trajectory on the other side when we “graduate” and get our wings.
