Luke 23:44-45  It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, while the sun’s light failed; and the curtain of the temple was torn in two.  Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.

The curtain of the temple was about thirty feet tall and weighty, like a tapestry. It separated the “Most Holy Place” from all of the surrounding areas of the temple around it.  The Most Holy Place was entered just once a year by the High Priest on the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur, to sprinkle the blood of sacrificial animals as atonement (at-one ment) for sin. Now, the death of Jesus became for us the once-for-all sacrifice, opening the way for even me, and you, into the most holy place of God’s presence. That curtain of separation was torn in two from the top down! Let’s all ponder that today, and rejoice. We are a forgiven people, cleansed and declared to be guiltless, for Jesus the Rescuer has opened a way for us, where previously there was no way.   Pastor Bill
