Philippians 4:  4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. 5 Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. 6 Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Don’t worry! Be happy?  Not really. It’s not about ignoring or overcoming the blues or anxieties in whatever guise they may come. It’s about what we decide to actively do when life is difficult or our attitude is at a particularly low ebb. What we need to do, says God through St Paul, is act!  Actively rejoice instead of passively sulking and stewing. Are you kidding me Paul? Over what shall I rejoice? Maybe start with the most basic – I rejoice O God that I am your much beloved child even when that’s not what I’m feeling. I rejoice that you Lord have promised to never leave or forsake me – NEVER EVER – you’re here, with me, now, for me, on my side, even though I can’t seem to find you at the moment. Feelings come and go. Facts remain. That’s how faith deepens, not easy, but simple and true.  Pastor Bill
