Peace in Our Time?

Peace in Our Time?

Isaiah 60:18 No longer will violence be heard in your land, nor ruin or destruction within your borders, but you will call your walls Salvation and your gates Praise.
Isaiah 60 is the first chapter of a section of Isaiah called by ancient rabbis “The Consolations of Israel”. And, like much of biblical prophecy, it can best be considered in multiple time dimensions, both near term as in Isaiah’s near vision of deliverance and restoration following exile – and ultimately in the much anticipated new millennial kingdom many expected Messiah to bring in – a time of influence, wealth, peace, glory and freedom from violence in the land of Israel – such consoling hopes! Israel has yet to see such times of any significant duration. Faithful Jews continue to pray for such times. Many Americans, and some of our leaders too, pray for such times here at home as well as in Israel. Some try to take sensible steps to bring it to pass – let’s all pray for their efforts. That would include efforts to rebalance the relative political power of citizens not in thrall with political cult leaders or the power of the gun lobby. Short of Jesus’ return, such efforts can’t be reasonably expected to eradicate violence in our land, but we could expect a great reduction in the flow of vitriol, blood and tears.
