Revelation 2:17 Special Purpose People

Revelation 2:17 Let anyone who has an ear listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches. To everyone who conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give a white stone, and on the white stone is written a new name that no one knows except the one who receives it.

Pretty mysterious eh? In scripture, God gave new names to some particular people for whom a special purpose or role had been chosen. Jacob became Israel, Saul became Paul, Sarai to Sarah, Abram to Abraham and several others. A 20th century English writer and Anglican priest, George Appleton, later a bishop, wrote a dozen books in his days in ministry. He served in Burma, London, Australia and Jerusalem. Here’s one of his prayers for a deeper sense of his own being and God’s secret name for him:

Give me a candle of the Spirit, O God, as I go down into the deeps of my being. Show me the hidden things, the creatures of my dreams, the storehouse of forgotten memories and hurts. Take me down to the spring of my life, and tell me my nature and my name. Give me freedom to grow, so that I may become that self, the seed of which You planted in me at my making.

In ancient Greece, judges and juries voted innocent or guilty in court with white or black stones. Still mysterious, right? We are judged innocent in Christ. We too will be given new, personal names known only to God, written on our white stone. This all seems to be about coming to understand ourselves better by God’s grace as we seek always to grow in the direction of closer resemblance to the Savior himself. Maybe we could all benefit from applying Appleton’s prayer to ourselves.
