Power of Love

Power of Love

1 Peter 2:22-24 ‘He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.’ When he was abused, he did not return abuse; when he suffered, he did not threaten; but he entrusted himself to the one who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that, free from sins, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.

Far too many preachers for far too long have presented this as the wrath of God against sin having been poured out on Jesus so that it didn’t have to be poured out on us – this is known as the penal substitutionary theory of the atonement. It is rooted in Old Testament images of an angry God and ignores the countless times God worked in love to discipline, forgive and rescue his beloved but disobedient people of Israel. The resurrection of Jesus demonstrated the ultimate power of love to overcome any and every thing. God is love and so Love is the strongest force in the universe! The New Testament makes clear the fullness of God’s loving power by absorbing the toxicity of all of everyone’s anti-love (aka sin) into God’ own self through Jesus’ body and then, in less than two days, totally neutralized its power to bring about ultimate death for Jesus, or you, or me.
