Prayer Starter

Prayer Starter

Psalm 61:2-3 From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe.

Our youth group used to have a favorite refrain to one of the songs we loved – “Jesus is the rock and he rolls my blues away. Bop, shoobop  – shoobop Oooh!”  Feel afar off sometimes?  way out at the edge?  heart growing faint? Come to the Rock in prayer – maybe you don’t even know how to get started.  Maybe try something really simple. Some very simple prayer “starters” certainly include “Help me…”  “Sorry Lord about…” “Please God ,l…”  Better still is one very ancient prayer “starter” rooted in the gospels that goes like this “Lord Jesus Christ, son of God, have mercy on ____ regarding _____.” Then repeat it again a couple of times with different names, issues, pronouns and needs in the blanks as the Holy Spirit may bring to mind. Maybe start with yourself in that first blank then continue circling outwards to family members, friends, groups, nations, issues of the day…It works something like a sourdough baker’s starter. You might even find that you can keep going longer than you expected as the Spirit proves faithful in filling in the blanks you keep providing via that “starter” sentence prayer fragment.
