Proverbs 3:5–8 Trust in the LORD with All Your Heart

Proverbs 3:5–8 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil. It will be a healing for your flesh and a refreshment for your body.

Other than a year as assistant Cub Master for my son Matt’s den, I was never involved with scouting. I grew up in New York City and thoroughly mastered the entire subway system maps for Manhattan where I worked early in my career, for Queens where I lived, Brooklyn where I went to High School and the Bronx for college. No problem, I was completely comfortable getting around pretty much anywhere around the Big Apple. But drop me into some forested woodland of the nearby Catskill or Shawangunk mountains, and fuhgeddaboudit ! Without a compass I was lost in the first twenty minutes. The wisdom of today’s passage from Proverbs is to know and trust the Spirit of our God for whatever guidance and course correction you need for living well. The phrase “dead reckoning” is a navigational term meaning you’re picking a course based solely on your last known position – often, that’s just lost in the woods.
