Matthew 7:12 “In everything, do to others as you would have them do to you; for this is the law and the prophets.”

Pretty old, but a great goody. I probably first heard this somewhere back in my toddler days. Some folks push back on this, saying treat others as they want to be treated rather than presume they want the same treatment you do. Yeah but.  A few things are so basic to humanity that we all need and want them; I’m thinking here about respect. And respect includes paying attention, valuing the other, willingness to listen and learn – all as appropriate to the situation and the relationship. That takes us back to Jesus’ own new commandment  in John 13 “love one another as I have loved you”. For us, that means going the extra mile in respecting the other. Each person we encounter in life is a beloved child of God, an eternal being, of inestimable worth in Jesus’ mind – one for whom he went to the uttermost. Let’s think “what’s appropriate in the way of respect here”, and then exceed reasonable expectations. That’s more than just the law and the prophets – that’s the full plan Jesus envisioned for his followers, go beyond and love as he loved.
