Romans 12:15 Life is Wonderful and Life is Difficult

Romans 12:15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep.

Life is wonderful, and life is difficult! St Paul here calls us to be present with others in the full range of human experience, most especially those at these opposite ends of the emotional spectrum that are most deeply felt and remembered. We are made by God for love, and love flowers primarily in relationship. The need and opportunity for love is always heightened in times of great emotion. A joy shared is doubled – a grief shared is halved says an old folk saying that I’m guessing became the common way of interpreting tody’s scripture passage by some wise saint of old. But, there’s another important dimension to this passage when we reflect on the fact of the amazingly interconnected world we live in today – there are lots more “neighbors”! In fact, in the USA today there are thirty millions more souls created in the image and likeness of God than there were on all of planet Earth in Jesus’ day. We are all in his together. Lord, teach us how to live joyfully with and on behalf of those who are well and weep in active compassion with and behalf of those who are oppressed, repressed and depressed.
