Flesh vs Spirit

Romans 8:12 – Flesh vs. Spirit

Romans 8:12 “So then, brothers and sisters, we are obligated, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— for if you live according to the flesh, you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, “Abba! Father!” it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God.

The phrase, “according to the flesh” certainly includes our physical appetites. But that understanding is in no way limited to so narrow a meaning. Rather, it refers to all that is merely natural in us – our built-in human nature that biases us to the demands of self and ego which leans against the new command Jesus gave that we love one another as He has loved us. Paul contrasts flesh and Spirit as ways of helping us see that we are not human beings with a spiritual dimension. Instead, we are primarily spiritual beings living temporarily in physical dwellings. The essential me, and the essential you are sort of “camping out” here in tents made of bodily stuff. When our thinking gets that straight, we get much greater clarity on our true identity, priorities and potentials in Christ.and our connectedness to our shared “Abba”.
