Matthew 7:24-29 Solid Rock Sinking Sand

Matthew 7:24-29 ‘Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell—and great was its fall!’ Now when Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as their scribes.

One having authority – teachers, managers, parents, officers – all with authority of one sort or another – Jesus’ style of authority v the scribe and pharisee type of authority is the point to focus on here. One builds on sand and the other on rock. In English, we see the difference in two closely related yet significantly different forms of authority – one is authoritarian, like scribes, pharisees, controllers, rule and discipline focused holders of authority. The other is authoritative, yes, there are rules and structure but carried out warmly in a context best described as relational. With authoritarians on the other hand, the point is conformity to the rules and the context is best described as functional. This is pretty much the same difference as the one between grace and law, New Testament and Old ! Which kind of authority do we wield over our own responses and opinions as we deal with others, with political views, our kids and grandkids? The old hymn verse comes to mind: In my heart, In my heart, yes I want to be like Jesus in my heart! Rock is indeed a better foundation than sand.
