Romans 13:1 No Authority Except from God

Romans 13:1 Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God.

Yesterday’s July 4th celebration marked the beginning of a great shift in the source of authority – the passing, unanimously, by all thirteen colonies of the Declaration of Independence. The colonists rejected the English king because of his various forms of abuse and injustice. As radical as that was, even more radical was the notion, articulated in that declaration that: “Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed”. This is a very Presbyterian and Reformed idea rooted in the biblical insight that sin, self-interest, evil intent, foolishness, violence and abuse of power may easily arise in the choices of centralized power in the hands of one or a few highly placed individuals. But, elected representatives of the governed were unlikely as a whole group to go as far astray as any king or bishop. Of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, over 20% of them were Presbyterian laypersons who seemed to believe, along with many others, that this new thing, representative government, was being established by God! The bad news is that we now face myriad attempts to limit access to the process by which the governed express their will. This, to my mind, is an attempt to override God’s role in the establishment of our form of government. Church and State ultimately do, and must, be assessed together from the pulpits of America. A vote for election throttling politicians is most often an offense to our God. Below are some Dominion Voting Machines that Fox News kept lying about – those falsehoods cost Fox three quarters of a billion$. No matter the facts though to an Oklahoma Republican candidate whose advertising shows him him, even now, shooting a Dominion voting machine.
