Deuteronomy 10:17-19 For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who is not partial and takes no bribe, who executes justice for the orphan and the widow, and who loves the strangers, providing them food and clothing. You shall also love the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.

Here’s Moses, among the greatest and perhaps earliest among the prophets. He has God’s words for how we are treat those who are sociologically, economically and legally most likely to be disadvantaged, even actively oppressed. And virtually all of the other prophets address the same problem – we are to actively bless “the widow, the orphan and the alien among us”, they were the folks most likely to get life’s leftovers.  When Presbyterians and others elect, install and/or ordain pastors, deacons and elders, they vow in their ministries to try to show the love and justice of Jesus Christ. Those who are not ordained, though not taking that vow, are nevertheless called as followers of Jesus to walk with those same concerns for all who seem stuck with life’s leftovers in any significant way. Let’s keep these things in mind as campaign season heats up.
