Ezekiel 47:22  You shall allot it as an inheritance for yourselves and for the aliens who reside among you and have begotten children among you. They shall be to you as citizens of Israel; with you they shall be allotted an inheritance among the tribes of Israel.

How easily we can forget that our God is a tearer down of walls, not one to put up walls. The ancient Israelites never honored this or many similar passages with any consistency. The words of the prophets may have been written on the temple roadway walls but few took them to heart. Whether it’s the walls separating Jews and Palestinians today, east and west Berliners a generation ago or the former owners of the American southwest from the current owners. And us? We too can build walls; we do it sometimes even in families, churches and marriages. St Paul says this about Jesus in the second chapter of his letter to believers in the city of Ephesus 14 “For he is our peace; in his flesh he has made both groups (Jew and Gentile) into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us”. May Jesus keep becoming more and more the shalom between each of us and the people in our lives, our community and our world.
