Mark Isham –
Who am I, and why am I here? These are rhetorical questions that human beings have been asking themselves probably ever since the Creator breathed that first glimmer of self-awareness into our ancient human ancestors. We think of adolescents and young adults being preoccupied with these questions, but the reality is that we spend our lifetimes getting to know ourselves and understanding how we fit into God’s plans for the universe.
The Psalmist understood that our individuality is known by God even before our birth, and the writer of the first epistle to the church in Corinth wrote of how we are all individuals, yet one body in Christ. Knowing our unique gifts, talents, and attributes and understanding how these all fit perfectly into that great jigsaw puzzle that is the body of Christ helps us find purpose and meaning as we work together to build Christ’s realm in our world.
